HIV/AIDS

HIV is the abbreviation of human immunodeficiency virus. This virus is the cause of AIDS and attacks the immune system, which is responsible for protecting the body from disease and infection. The cells most attacked by HIV are the C4 + T lymphocytes, whose DNA is compromised so that the invading virus makes copies of itself and spreads.

AIDS occurs when the HIV infection significantly compromises the immune system of the individual. The body is then susceptible to opportunistic infections such as viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, pneumonia, toxoplasmosis and even some cancers.
